At the age of nineteen lydia had moved to vallauris in the south of france with her mother who worked at a pottery studio in the town. At 19 lydia corbett then called sylvette david became picasso s muse. He was immediately entranced and immortalised her in a series of paintings ceramics and sculptures. Lydia corbett was born in paris in 1934 to an influential art dealer based in the champs elysees and his wife a studio potter. A bevy of artists had an ongoing intrigue with the creative exploits of pablo picasso in france during the mid century and that fascination was further enhanced when sylvette david lydia corbett became his muse in the 50 s. The sylvette series is now seen as one of picasso s most diverse and experimental bodies of work to be inspired by a single woman. Ceramics lydia corbett s ceramics are an integral and necessary part of her oeuvre as an artist and her work sometimes recalls elements from antiquity such as the paintings of the early roman or etruscan pottery or cretan beaked jugs and yet also might recall ken kiff and the unselfconsciousness of karel appel or asger jorn.
